Poker Luck Game Or Skill Game?

If you’ve always thought that sports persons are lucky when they go on to win medals, you’ve only got to look at Bob Gibson to see the lack of truth in that notion. His 16 year career span resulted in his name being added to the Hall of Fame in’81 and you can be sure that his victories through the years couldn’t just be credited to luck. If luck had been in charge, he wouldn’t have gone that far.

The same principle applies to the game of poker. As a poker player you certainly need luck but having too much of it can also become an issue. Yes, you actually read that right. If you’re not sure what I mean then keep reading to find out why too much of luck is actually a poker player’s worst enemy.

To begin with let’s consider the role luck plays for inexperienced or inexpert poker players. Lady luck is the most common reason why a bad poker player wins the pot. This luck could take on various forms including a great hand.

Talk about a skilled and experienced poker player, on the other hand, and you’ll see that they’d rather not have luck be a part of their winning equation. They’d rather depend on rational methods and calculations that tell them clearly what the odds are for them to win. It also helps to cut losses and keep them minimal. An unstable factor like luck can really ruin their careful calculations.

But look around and you’re bound to find many people referring to a skilled player as “lucky” because they believe his winning run is just that – a result of good luck. Ask the player himself and you’ll get a different answer – logic. Quite often their wins are merely a result of giving others the illusion that they have a better hand than they actually do, causing opponents to give up and then winning the pot for themselves.

There’s no denying the fact that luck does come into the picture from time to time, however, you’ll find that most skilled players approach the game through logic and rationality. If you’ve always relied on luck to win at Poker, it’s probably time to learn the trick of logical and analytical winning. As you know, you’re luck won’t last forever.

And finally, a word of encouragement to those experienced players that have been suffering a string of defeats lately – keep up the logical and analytical method of approaching the game. They’ll soon put you back on Win Street. Keep thinking logically and analyzing the game as you play and you’ll never miss lady luck at your table for the rest of your days.
