In modern times, computer use has become widespread and thus children and teenagers, in particular, have flocked to the internet. This has given us great benefits as well as problems.
Because we cannot sit behind our child and watch his or her computer usage 24 hours per day, it is very easy for a child to fall into danger by talking to someone either posing as another child or purposely trying to talk to children for illegal purposes.
In order to make sure that your child or teenager is safe while using the internet, you should take a few measures to help the process along.
Firstly, you should talk to your child or teenager about their computer usage and remind them never to give out personal information including your house’s address, for example. Also, remind your child or teenager that strangers online may be posing or pretending to be someone else in order to gain access to them.
Besides dangerous occurrences happening from talking with strangers on the internet, it’s also important to remember that your child could be at risk with other people that he or she already knows on the internet.
Instant messaging, in particular, is considered a prime area for these problematic situations. Instant messaging are quick messages sent back and forth between two or more users. In recent times, it is abused by youth to send inappropriate messages and make solicitations that a child would not normally make in person.
It is important to talk to your child or teenager about this, as well, although you may need some stronger measures if it continues to be a problem. There is now software available that can help you keep track of what your child or teenager is doing online and make sure that nothing inappropriate is going on.
